GFW, law enforcement quickly resolve online bomb threat - NUjournal
WINTHROP — Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop (GFW) Public School and local law enforcement quickly responded and resolved a bomb threat made on social media Wednesday morning.
GFW School Resource Officer Aron Hacker was advised by GFW Superintendent Jeff Horton and Technology Director Wade Werner of the threat to the schools at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
Hacker said law enforcement responded, including Winthrop and Gibbon Police and the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office. Gibbon Elementary School and Winthrop Middle and High School were searched and an investigation revealed the threat was not credible.
“No one was harmed. There is no current public safety threat,” Hacker said. “The investigation revealed the threat was made by a minor. Reports will be sent to the Sibley County Attorney’s Office for charges.”
Horton said the school district command team quickly assembled and partnered with law enforcement agencies.
“As a precautionary measure, GFW Public Schools activated its crisis plan and relocated all students outside the building at multiple locations,” Horton said. “Thanks to the quick work of law enforcement, the threat was resolved quickly, in about 90 minutes.”
Horton said staff and students were able to return to school Wednesday after it was determined there was no credible threat.
“We communicated with student parents throughout the investigation, letting them know their kids were safe,” Horton added. “Parents had the option of having their kids excused for the rest of the school day, or having them return to school.”
Horton said school will be back in session Thursday, Feb. 3.
In addition, Horton said social and emotional support was available at the school for students and staff Wednesday as it is every day.
“A big thanks to our dedicated staff, law enforcement agencies, city leaders for coordination and student’s families for supporting the threat investigation, resolving it quickly, and keeping students safe,” Horton added.
