GOP has contempt for the rule of law - Warren Tribune Chronicle
DEAR EDITOR:
Republicans scream at the top of the tallest mountains tales about the importance of the rule of law. Sadly, it seems Republicans don’t hear their own screams.
From Jan. 6, 2021, to recent events in Columbus, this has become only clearer to me. The Ohio GOP is the party of a pattern of unlawful actions from Coingate to ECOT, to the House Bill 6 corruption and now unconstitutional gerrymandering.
The partisan Republicans on the Ohio Redistricting Committee illustrate this hypocrisy. The Ohio GOP has repeatedly disregarded the Ohio Constitution and Ohio Supreme Court. The constitution requires that legislative districts reflect the statewide voting preferences of the voters, but this clear law has been ignored. The Ohio Redistricting Commission instead attempted to force upon us unconstitutional and partisan districts. The Ohio Supreme Court rejected these unconstitutional maps, and the GOP ignored the court deadline to present constitutional maps. The Republican-led redistricting commission negligently met on the day of the deadline and missed the deadline.
More recently with the May 3 primary looming, Ohio Republicans have proposed delaying the election as they attempt to force upon us a new map that did not even get full support among the Republican members and received no bipartisan support. This is ridiculous.
The state of Ohio needs fair legislative districts, and Ohio Republicans need to respect both the will of the voters, reflected in the constitutional amendment, and the rule of law.
