Gov. Abbott signs anti-smuggling bill into law - Spectrum News
AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday met with McAllen city officials to, among other things, sign SB576, known as the “anti-smuggling bill,” into law.
According to Abbott, the law will make it easier to arrest and prosecute human smugglers. It also increases the penalties for smuggling, especially if payment is involved.
Today, I signed a bill into law that'll increase penalties on human smugglers emboldened by Biden's open border policies.

The governor was joined by state Rep. J.M. Lozano, R-Kingsville, as well as law enforcement and other local officials of the Rio Grande Valley.
"As we continue to combat the crisis at our border, the State of Texas is using every tool we have to secure the border and protect innocent lives from crimes related to illegal immigration like human smuggling," Abbott wrote in a news release announcing the bill’s signature. "That is why I am proud to sign Senate Bill 576 into law, which will help us crack down on human smuggling and keep our communities safe. Thank you to Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa and Representative JM Lozano for working together on this legislation and for your efforts to protect vulnerable people from the horrors of human smuggling."
Under SB576, proof that a smuggler received payment won’t be a requirement for prosecution.
