Gov. DeWine announces $250 million proposal for law enforcement - ABC6OnYourSide.com
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Lt. Governor Jon Husted announced on Monday a $250 million proposal for law enforcement.
"To put it mildly when it comes to law enforcement, these past few years have been difficult," DeWine said. "This is clearly not the time to defund police. This is time to fund them."
DeWine said it is time to fund first responders in a new and creative way that helps them protect Ohioans.
The governor said of the $250 million in federal American Rescue Act funding, the state's proposal would dedicate $175 million for supporting state and local law enforcement efforts to prevent violence, solve crimes, and hold violent offenders accountable.
"This proposal to spend $175 million would help agencies with hotspot policing, allowing officers to put more focus on reducing crime in places where it's the worst," DeWine said.
DeWine said the state is working with Attorney General Dave Yost to develop a program to give law enforcement easier access to ballistics technology used in gun crimes and to help identify who pulled the trigger.
DeWine said the proposal would also help with the backlog in the state's crime labs and coroners' offices.
The governor said the proposal would also provide $75 million for supporting the resilience and recovery and recruitment of Ohio's first responders.
"We ask our police officers day in and day out to do so very much. We ask them to deal with, frankly, the worst society has to offer," DeWine said. "We must offer more services to our first responders to front the trauma of the jobs they hold."
DeWine and Husted were joined by members of the Ohio General Assembly, Buckeye State Sheriffs' Association (BSSA), Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police, Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Ohio Prosecutor's Association, Ohio Fire Chiefs' Association, Ohio Emergency Management Agency, Ohio Fire Marshal's Office, City of Middletown, and City of Findlay.
