Gov. Hogan signs emergency gas tax bill into law for Maryland - WBAL TV Baltimore

ANNAPOLIS, Md. —

Gov. Larry Hogan made it official -- drivers in Maryland will get to enjoy a 37 cents a gallon break at the gas pump for the next 30 days.

Moments after the ink dried on the 30-day gas tax suspension bill, station owners began lowering their prices, much to the delight of drivers.

"I think it is good news. I think it is the right thing to do. I think it is reasonable taking all the things that are going on in the world so," driver Ronnie Thomas said.

Teressa O'Keefe, another driver, said the bill gas tax suspension is going to make a difference in people's lives.

"I think there is a lot of people working really hard and trying to get back from COVID. We have a lot of people out of work. I think it is going to make a big difference in quite a few people's lives," O'Keefe said.

An amendment by Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot allowed drivers to save immediately.

"There are 2,300 gas stations in Maryland. We regulate them. None of them are indifferent to helping pass this through to their customers," Franchot said.

The bill signing became a bi-partisan show of unity.

"Makes Maryland the first state in the nation to immediately suspend the collection of the gas tax. As we continue to stand in solidarity against Russian aggression in Ukraine and Marylanders face the impact of surging inflation with the average price of gas rapidly rising," Hogan said.

Senate President Bill Ferguson said the signing was a show of solidarity.

"We are here because we are showing that Maryland leaders know that when there are problems that Marylanders are facing, we come together and we fix them," Ferguson said.

House Speaker Adrienne Jones agreed.

"This 30-day gas tax suspension is a targeted response to extraordinary circumstances," Jones said.

The comptroller's office also expects out-of-state drivers to start filling up in Maryland which will help the state's economy.
