Gov. Lee hopeful new education funding plan will become law in two months - WZTV

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A new bill from Governor Bill Lee would overhaul how the state funds education.
The governor just released details of the new plan this week that would invest $9 billion in state and local funds to public schools. The plan includes $1.8 billion earmarked for individual student needs, like students with learning disabilities, or those living in poverty.
There’s also $376 million in direct funding for supplemental programs, like early literacy and career and technical education.
School funding will depend on enrollment and whether individual students meet criteria for added funding. The plan now heads to state legislators to decide whether it will become law.
“It’s already being presented and the details of that to legislators, there’s a lot of work beginning and a lot of conversation happening right now,” Governor Lee said.
But some legislators have expressed concern with the bill’s timeline. The regular session ends in two months, and some worry whether that will be enough time to get it right.
“This isn’t one you try to rush through in a three-week time frame just because you need to get it done before the next election, I think this is something you should take very slowly and be very cautious in how you do it,” Sen. Jeff Yarbro of Nashville said.
The governor says the bill has been under construction for months, and he’s hopeful the next 8 weeks will be enough time.
“There’s a lot of work to be done, but there are weeks ahead and multiple committees ahead in the process, we certainly are very hopeful that this can get accomplished in this session,” Lee said.
The bill will need to go through at least seven committees before it’s voted on in the state senate and house.
