EL PASO, Texas [KFOX14] — Governor Gregg Abbott will sign the Anti-Smuggling Bill into law on Wednesday in McAllen, Texas.

The Anti-Smuggling bill also known as Senate Bill 576 was passed by Texas legislators back on June 14 and went into effect on September 1st.

The bill is aimed directly at human smugglers who transport, guide and assist migrants trying to cross into the United States.

While the problem of human smugglers is nothing new, one of the amendments in SB 576 is law enforcements will no longer need to provide proof a payment was made in exchange for services.

Under the context of the law, human smuggling does not relate to the transportation of individuals. It includes concealing individuals from law enforcement, helping an individual flee from law enforcement and guiding or assisting two or more people into new land without consent of the landowner, according to the Texas State Legislature website.

The signing of the bill comes at a pivotal moment in U.S migration as thousands of Haitian migrants are living under the international bridge in Del Rio seeking refuge.
