Group sues Iowa over English language voting law - KCCI Des Moines
DES MOINES, Iowa —
Iowa's 19-year-old law requiring English-only voting instructions is headed to court.
The League of United Latin American Citizens filed the lawsuit Thursday in Polk County.
LULAC says the 2002 English Only law has a section that does allow instructions in other languages if they are needed to secure a citizen’s right to vote.
A court decision in 2008 bans election officials from providing voting materials in anything other than English.
LULAC is asking the court to strike down that earlier court decision, saying 50,000 Iowans who are eligible to vote predominately speak Spanish.
LULAC first filed a petition with the same concerns to the Iowa Secretary of State in July. After 60 days of no response, they filed the lawsuit.
