MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) — Members of the Gun Sense Action Committee of the Horry County Democratic Party gathered this weekend to protest the state's new open carry law and continued gun show sales.

This is the fifth year of protests against the Myrtle Beach Gun Show.

Group leaders say gun protections for South Carolinians aren't improving but worsening.

They say that private sales of guns like at gun shows aren't regulated or required to have background checks and they want that to change.

"The dealers were doing exactly what they should be doing with background checks, but there were private owners, private sellers that had multiple guns that were just selling to anybody and everybody that had the cash and that's not, that's not family-friendly for Myrtle Beach," Chairman of the GunSense Action Committee, Henry Garbelman said.

Other organizations like Mom's Demand Action, Sandy Hook Promise and Black Voters Matter were also involved in the protest.

The new Open Carry law went into effect in South Carolina on Aug. 15, which means people can now legally have their handguns visible, as long as they have a concealed weapons permit.

Under the concealed weapon law, a person must be 21 years old to receive a permit and also pass a background check.

Even with the new law, handguns are not allowed in gun-free zones like courthouses and schools.
