CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WV News) — Residents from across the region showed their appreciation for national, county and local police officers on Sunday during National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day was created by multiple organizations in 2015 to express their gratitude for officers in the United States.

City of Salem Mayor Bobby Samples not only wanted to express his appreciation Sunday, but also will at the city's next regular council meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

"I'm very grateful for the officers that we have — Chief Zahradnik, Sergeant Davis and Patrolman Haymond. I think they're doing a great job at what they're doing for the citizens of Salem," Samples said.

Samples communicates with officers regularly, including regarding updates to the homeless/transient population.

Robin Hersman, of Clarksburg, is Davis' mother. She said she was initially worried about her son entering the profession but "it was his dream."

"I am all for our men and women in blue," Hersman said. "I'm sure some people don't share my opinion, but everyone is entitled to their opinion."

Laurel Park's Terry Jarrett personally knows Clarksburg Police Chief Mark Kiddy as well as active and retired Harrison County Sheriffs Department personnel.

Jarrett, who coaches the Clarksburg American Legion baseball team, says he routinely talks with police personnel and thanks them for their service.

"Probably not often enough," Jarrett said. "We have done military appreciation days at the baseball field — we should do a law enforcement day, too."

"I don’t think I have ever met a more dedicated person to his community than Chief Kiddy. He loves Clarksburg."

Jarrett also did not feel law enforcement officers are appreciated enough.

Kent Drake, who lives near Shinnston, has never had to call 911 for help, but supports local police and their efforts/training.

As does Bridgeport's Renee Dobranski, who has neighbors who are part of the police force.

Dobranski, who has lived outside the central city limits since 2005, not only sees Bridgeport Police often but also Harrison County Sheriff's Department responding to emergencies.
