Hawaii Law Dean's 'Leadership Lab' Aims to Debunk the Myth That Diverse Future Leaders Are Hard to Find - Law.com

- Camille Nelson, dean of the University of Hawaii’s William S. Richardson School of Law is the driving force behind the new Island Leadership Lab seminar at the school, which concluded its pilot last week.
- The purpose of the Leadership Lab, which will be held again during the fall 2022 semester, is to train students who are traditionally underrepresented in the legal profession to eventually assume leadership roles in the legal industry (or any other industry for that matter).
- The Lab was funded using $50,000 seed money from the Hawaii Leadership Forum, which “serves as a catalyst and convener for initiatives that improve leadership throughout the state,” according to its website.
Camille Nelson, dean of the University of Hawaii’s William S. Richardson School of Law, is not buying the excuse that diverse future legal leaders are hard to come by—so she’s challenging it head-on.
“People like to complain about the dearth of viable, prepared candidates,” Nelson continued. “They say they can’t find great applicants, which I don’t believe, but if that’s the case, what are they doing about it? Everyone starts from a place of scarcity to justify the absence of women, people of color, queer, not 100% able-bodied.”
