Hazard Pay Law Invalid, InstaCart Tells Top Washington Court - Bloomberg Law

Instacart parent Maplebear Inc. urged the Washington Supreme Court on Thursday to invalidate Seattle’s coronavirus-prompted hazard pay mandate for food delivery workers as an unlawful intrusion on industry’s right to carry on a business.

The grocery service argued that Seattle overstepped its authority by imposing a price control, invalidating contracts with drivers without compensating the company, and violating a separate voter-approved state law barring taxes on groceries. Instacart and other delivery companies previously said they increased pay averaging $30 an hour, bulked up the number of delivery persons, and offered drivers free health and safety kits with masks and sanitizer ...
