Here’s what’s in the Trooper Thomas Clardy law targeting marijuana-impaired driving - MassLive.com
Gov. Charlie Baker on Wednesday announced the re-filing of legislation that would equalize marijuana with alcohol in driving impaired cases, a move Baker and public safety advocates say is long overdue since Massachusetts legalized recreational marijuana five years ago.
Now dubbed the Trooper Thomas Clardy law — honoring the 44-year-old State Police trooper killed in 2016 by an impaired driver who had marijuana in his system — the bill is a step toward more uniform standards and reducing motor vehicle crashes, according to Baker, law enforcement leaders and public safety advocates, including Clardy’s family.
“This bill will provide law enforcement officers with more rigorous drug detection training and will strengthen the legal process by authorizing the courts to acknowledge that the active ingredient in marijuana can and does impair motorists,” Baker said in a statement. “The bill draws on thoughtful recommendations from a broad cross-section of stakeholders, and we look forward to working with our legislative colleagues to pass this bill and make our roads safer.”
