Hinds County law enforcement increase patrols as safety initiative starts - WAPT Jackson

JACKSON, Miss. —

It is night two of the homecoming blues operation.

The Hinds County Sheriff's Office has increased visibility across the area to help promote safety as many come into town to celebrate Jackson State's homecoming week. This is only the start of the county-wide initiative.

Their goal is to get illegal weapons off of the streets.

"We are dedicated to making sure this weekend is safe for everyone to have a festive time, but we are trying to make sure we get those violators off the streets. And what we are talking about, are those dirty guns," said Interim Sheriff Marshand Crisler.

The interim sheriff explained that dirty guns mean guns that are used by convicted felons.

Friday a man was shot dead with an assault-style rifle. This is what law enforcement is hoping to prevent. So far they have been successful.

"Last night, before we even got started with our first checkpoint, interesting enough, some guy who was high off I don't know what came flying down the street zig-zagging in a neighborhood at a high rate of speed, and I had seven or eight officers who hadn't even gotten to the check-point yet. Every one of them threw their blue lights on and shut him down in the middle of that neighborhood," Crisler said.

They ended up finding drugs, a gun, ski mask and bulletproof vest.

"So this person was in the thrown of doing something highly illegal," Crisler said.

The HCSO said that they will be doing these safety checkpoints throughout the rest of the year.
