Hochul nominates Kevin Law to lead ESD board - Newsday
Local business leader Kevin Law is Gov. Kathy Hochul’s choice to lead the board of the state’s primary business-aid agency, she told Newsday on Thursday.
Hochul plans to nominate Law, former CEO of the Long Island Association business group, to be a director of Empire State Development. She also is tapping him to be board chairman.
Law’s nomination is subject to confirmation by the State Senate. Both are volunteer jobs.
"After the devastating impact the pandemic had on New York’s economy, we need the best of the best at the helm to lead our economy," Hochul said on Thursday. "Kevin Law is ready to lead New York’s economic development in communities and cities across the state and bring our economy back stronger than ever before."
Law will replace ESD board chairman Steve Cohen, who resigned in August. Cohen, a long-time confidant of former Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, was named in the state attorney general’s report as allegedly helping to discredit Lindsey Boylan, a former state employee who accused Cuomo of sexual harassment.
Law, 60, of St. James, is a partner and executive vice president at Tritec Real Estate Co. He joined the East Setauket-based developer in April after 10½ years at the helm of the LIA, the region’s most prominent business group.
Prior to leading the LIA, Law was CEO and president of the Long Island Power Authority and worked as an attorney. Hochul is the fourth governor to tap him to lead initiatives in the past 30 years.
Law also was appointed co-vice chairman of the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council in 2011. Since then, he and other council members have secured $727 million for 885 projects in the region, the second most after the Syracuse area.
Kaw also represents Suffolk County on the MTA board and chairs the Stony Brook University Council.
