HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — The Horry County Public Safety Committee met Tuesday and we're getting a better look at the shortages local law enforcement agencies are facing.

There are three vacancies within 911 dispatch.

About 22 radio transmissions happen every minute in the department and a 911 incident happens every two minutes.

The Horry County Sheriff's Office is currently down 50 people and is in a mandatory overtime situation.

Sheriff Phillip E. Thompson said the sheriff's office has been a 'revolving door' with people retiring as a new hire comes in.

"We are in the process of creating a recruitment video to put out there to help. We're working hard, we aren't giving up, I know they're going to come and I know we'll get there," Thompson said.

Horry County police added 39 people in 2021 and they're looking to hire even more next year.

Right now they have 298 sworn officers in the department.
