HS girls’ basketball: SIA to meet Brooklyn Law and Tech Saturday at noon in state event - SILive.com
The final game of the high school girls’ basketball season, involving an Island squad, will take place Saturday when Staten Island Academy faces Brooklyn Law and Tech in the substitute Federation state event at noon at Long Island Lutheran .
The Tigers are the lone Island team in the event and will compete in the Class A division.
Unlike the true Federation event -- which brings teams from the PSAL, CHSAA, NYSPHSAA and the Private Schools together in a championship tournament -- only teams from the PSAL and Private Schools chose to compete in this event and will compete in six divisions -- Class AA, A, and B for both the boys and girls.
The actual Federation event was canceled for the third straight year because of the pandemic. Officials hope to resume the tourney next year.
CHSAA A state champ St. Joseph by-the-Sea would have qualified for the tournament and would have met SIA in the opening round, but the Catholic schools opted not to play this year.
Brooklyn Law topped Frederick Douglass in the PSAL A division championship game last week. SIA, meanwhile, gets an automatic berth in the tourney each year because there are no other Class A Private schools downstate.
The SIA-Brooklyn Law and Tech game is a winner-take-all contest.
