Hudson solicitor headed to Twinsburg as law director - Akron Beacon Journal

Special to the Twinsburg Bulletin

TWINSBURG – The city’s new law director will not have to travel far from his old job, as Hudson solicitor Matthew J. Vazzana will come north a few miles to replace David Maistros.

Twinsburg Council confirmed the appointment of Vazzana at its Dec. 7 meeting. He will continue to work in Hudson until Dec. 31, will start his new duties Jan. 3, 2022 and will work with Maistros until the latter’s departure Jan. 21.

“I am honored to be selected as Twinsburg’s next law director,” said Vazzana. “I plan to continue the great work that has been done by David Maistros during his long tenure with the city.

“I eagerly look forward to working daily with Mayor [Ted] Yates, City Council and the city staff to ensure that Twinsburg remains a top-rated municipality for residents, businesses and visitors.”

Maistros has accepted a city manager position with a community in California. He has worked for Twinsburg for 24 years, including prosecutor and law director.

“We interviewed seven candidates, all of whom have very good backgrounds and experience,” said Yates. “Matt has big shoes to fill, and we are fortunate to have him.

“His entire career has been focused on municipal law, and he brings a wealth of experience to the city. Matt has the right legal background and disposition to quickly adapt to this challenging role.

“I look forward to working with Matt in this time of great opportunity for the city and its residents.”

Vazzana was promoted to Hudson’s solicitor from assistant city attorney in 2018. He represents the city in all legal matters, and supervises the prosecutor, special counsel and outside counsel.

His decade-long career working with municipalities began with Streetsboro, where he gained experience in planning, zoning and contract negotiation and review while serving as prosecutor and advising the police department on criminal charges.

He began his law career with internships with the city of Cleveland and the U.S. Coast Guard JAG Corps. He also has served as a legal adviser with the city of Aurora.

Maistros recently commented, “The city of Twinsburg has been an extremely important part of my life for many years. The professional experiences I carry forward were developed in Twinsburg, and I will forever be grateful.”

In other personnel actions at Council’s Dec. 7 session, Councilman Sam Scaffide was reelected president for 2022. He replaced Jo-Ann McFearin at mid-year after she resigned from Council. Bill Furey was elected vice president.

“I am looking forward to working with Council in 2022,” said Scaffide. “It should be a great year for the city.”

The following Council reps were sworn in: Karen Labbe, Ward 3; David Post, Ward 4; Greg Bellan, Ward 5; and Scott Barr, at large. Also sworn in were police sergeants Daniel Biada and Patrick Quinn.

Post is the only new member of Council. He ran unopposed in the fall election for the seat of Maureen Stauffer, who did not seek reelection. Labbe was elected after having been appointed to McFearin’s seat, while Bellan and Barr were reelected.

Councilwoman Daisy Walker volunteered to be Council’s Community Focus representative after Furey announced he would step down from the post.

Committee assignments for 2022 are: Scaffide – board of zoning appeals, public works and safety; Walker – justice, equity, diversity and inclusion; community relations, Chamber of Commerce and charter review oversight; Labbe – parks and rec, JEDI, fitness advisory, Twins Days and districting.

Post – Environmental, finance, capital improvements and public works; Bellan – finance, golf advisory, public works and safety; Furry – architectural review, finance, tax incentive, JEDI and treasury investment; and Barr – planning, safety, volunteer firemen and community relations.
