Huntington Center gains new law firm tenant - Columbus Business First - Columbus Business First
A recently renovated Capitol Square office building will gain a new tenant in 2022.
Law firm Taft, based in Cincinnati and founded in 1885, signed a lease for 50,000 square feet in the Huntington Center at 41 S. High Street.
Taft will relocate to the building in late 2022 and will occupy space on three floors, according to Hines, the international real estate firm that owns the building.
"We view this decision by a firm of Taft’s stature as an acknowledgment that the significant investment made in the building has positioned it well for the needs of today’s office tenants, Tyler Steele, Hines general property manager, said in a release.
The Huntington Center is a Class-A office tower that was developed by Hines in 1984. The building is located directly across the street from the Ohio Statehouse.
The 1 million-square-foot, 37-story office tower underwent a $18 million renovation in 2019. The renovation included a two-story indoor green wall in the lobby, updated common areas and modernized elevators and escalators. The updates also added a 6,000-square-foot conference center and tenant lounge on the 36th floor with an adjacent 4,000-square-foot rooftop terrace.
Huntington Center tenants also have access to a 27,000 square foot fitness center and several dining and amenity services on three levels within the building, Hines said. One Line Coffee, Einstein Bagels and Zoup are among food options in the building.
Taft made the decision to relocate its Columbus offices because of the overall building quality and strong amenities offered at Huntington Center, which the firm believes will promote collaboration among its employees and bolster recruiting efforts.
“It was important to select a flagship building that reflects Taft’s modern law firm brand, provides top amenities for our clients and team members, and helps us attract top talent to achieve our growth and client service goals. We are thrilled to be moving into Huntington Center and starting a new chapter in downtown Columbus,” said Taft’s Partner-in-Charge of Columbus Janica Pierce Tucker.
Taft was previously renting space at 65 E. State Street, behind the Statehouse. Manhattan-based Group RMC acquired the 26-story, 495,000-square-foot 65 E. State St. property for $36.8 million last year, according to property records.
Taft has offices in 11 cities, including Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dayton and Delaware.
Huntington Center is home to more than 30 businesses, with offices ranging from 1,000 square feet to nearly 200,000 square feet, Steele said in an emailed statement.
Other tenants include Huntington National Bank, Porter Wright, Morgan Stanley, PwC, Squire Patton & Boggs LLP, Thompson Hine, Calfee Halter & Griswold and Benesch, Friedlander, Coplan & Aronoff LLP.
Collin Wheeler and Brandon Ellis with CBRE in Columbus represented the owner in the transaction. Jeff Carey with JLL represented Taft in lease negotiations.
In an emailed statement, Wheeler said he continues to see a “flight-to-quality” by employers in the current real estate landscape.
"As the trophy asset of downtown Columbus, Huntington Center affords tenants with best-in-market amenities and services," Wheeler said. "Taft’s relocation supports this theme we’re seeing not only in Columbus but around the globe."
