Infrastructure law sends Michigan $563M to fix bridges in the next five years - MLive.com

I-69 bridge in Flint closed over structural stability concerns

A contractor’s concern over the structural stability of the Church Street bridge over I-69 in Flint has prompted the state to close the overpass until further notice. The Michigan Department of Transportation said in a news release that it closed the span and detoured traffic to Saginaw Street in order to make repairs to the bridge and protect drivers. Michigan is expected to receive $563 million to repair decaying bridges during the next five years thanks to the bipartisan infrastructure law signed last year.

The U.S. Department of Transportation released a breakdown of how each state will split $226.5 billion, the largest investment in bridges since the construction of the interstate highway system. Michigan ranks 10th in the country for federal bridge funds that will be appropriated between 2022-2026.

The Department of Transportation also announced 2022 appropriations for state projects through the federal-aid highway program. Michigan is set to receive $1.39 billion total this year under the infrastructure law.

Michigan has 1,219 bridges and over 7,345 miles of highway rated in “poor condition.” The state is expected to receive approximately $7.8 billion over five years in federal highway formula funding for highways and bridges.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer established a new state office to help direct federal funds coming to Michigan for roads, bridges and other infrastructure projects.

President Joe Biden signed the $1 trillion bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act into law last November. The funds also can be put toward replacing lead water service pipes, expanding high-speed internet and building a network of electric vehicle charging stations.

The Michigan Infrastructure Office will work with the Legislature and other state departments to strategically coordinate resources.
