Inside Top247 ATH Kendrick Law's rise to blue-chip status and his upcoming college decision - 247Sports
Kendrick Law Sr. is going to miss his old perch, atop the bleachers, most of the time in the corner, typically with a fisherman’s hat on, sunglasses and little video camera in his hand, shooting clips of the best player on the field, his son Kendrick Law who will announce his college decision Friday afternoon between Alabama, Florida State, LSU and Texas. The ceremony begins at 4pm (EST) and can be viewed on CBS Sports HQ.
“Unbelievable memorable moments,” the elder Law said.
“When he first started out people didn’t know he was my son and you could hear people in the video chanting for him. I always heard that and it makes me smile on the inside.”
The elder Law was smiling on the outside while reminiscing and says he will soon look into converting those DVD highlights into digital to have them forever. A former running back at Southern Arkansas University, he passed some pedigree down to his son and helped his alma mater win a conference championship in 1997 but it recently occurred to him he never showed his boy his ring.
“I just enjoyed being a dad,” he said. “I guess me watching him grow and watching him compete, I alway wanted him to do his best. I enjoyed the ride of watching him be competitive.”
Always a difference maker for every team he put pads on for, as the years went by Law quietly became one of the top two-way prospects in the country. He's a player that could make an impact at any of his four finalists at wide out or in the secondary. Standing at 5-foot-11, 195-pounds, Law has electric speed, he can make people miss, runs with power, catches the football well and those traits translate into he secondary from a coverage and tackling standpoint. We’ve seen him dominate in camp settings too as an elusive, downfield playmaker.
“This is a blessing to me,” his dad stated. “I never expected it. I had no outlook or no projection. I just always wanted him to do the best he could do and I didn’t compare him to anybody else. I just told him to be better today than he was yesterday and the rest will take care of itself.”
It certainly did, as Law is now the Top247’s No. 2 athlete recruit and No. 75 prospect overall. He was recently invited to play in the All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas on Jan. 8.
“I’m excited about him being able to for one go to school, that his talents allow him to go to school and work on a degree for zero dollars,” Law said. “College is very expensive nowadays, for him to be able to earn the opportunity for someone to pay for him to get a degree is what matters to me the most. I think the football aspect of it will take care of itself with his hard work and dedication. He’s got to have something to back it up with and to get that for zero dollars is a big thing for me.
“He wants to be an engineer. I want to get him somewhere he will have the support needed to make that happen. And if he decides to change along the way I’m good with that as well but as long as he can at least start off with what he wants to do engineering and do the best thing for that and make sure that’s supported academically no matter what and if he’s comfortable and happy I’m happy. It’s got to be somewhere he wants to be, not where daddy or mom or uncles. He has to be where he wants to be and where he’ll be happy and where it’s a successful partnership.”
With all that, the elder Law broke down all the finalists.
Alabama: “What is there not to like about Bama. Bama has stats, success, they treated us well. To be able to compete against some of the best athletes in the nation. Nick Saban gets some of the best athletes in the nation. You read the articles and you read about the practice and you’re competing against the best guys. Most of the time you’re competing against better guys in practice than you’re going to see in the game on Saturday. It gives you a chance to really improve yourself.”
Florida State: “They’ve been there. They were the second people to offer him. They haven’t dropped the ball at all. The genuineness, they did a great job of recruiting. I think Mike Norvell is a man of his word. He has genuine characteristics. I believe he’s going to do what he says. He’s going to spread the ball around and get it to his playmakers.”
LSU: “It’s the hometown state. They put more receivers in the league than any other school since 2001. One of the best engineering schools in the nation. It’s close to where he can get some internships or whatever it is he needs to be successful and LSU football is LSU football there is nothing like it in the world.”
Texas: “We like the creativity of Sarkisian, how he can move athletes around and get the ball in their hands as well. He has a plan, he has a vision and he seems pretty stern on making Texas a force to reckon with here in the near future and he’s trying to get those athletes over there to make it happen and compete with those teams they’re going to be facing, especially moving to the SEC.”
Law visited each of these programs in the summer and returned for officials with Florida State and Alabama getting game visits and Texas and LSU getting trips in December.
Soon Law will step to the podium and make his decision. His father won’t be taking the camera to college games.
“Hopefully I can record the games and watch the highlights that way,” he laughed.
