Iowa group wants lawmakers to amend voting rights law - KCCI Des Moines
DES MOINES, Iowa —
A grassroots group is pushing voting rights legislation at the Statehouse.
On Monday, the League of Women Voters of Iowa plans to present a petition signed by more than 5,000 Iowans to lawmakers asking them to repeal sections of a law passed last year that impacts elections.
Senate File 413 reduced the number of days absentee ballots can be accepted at the polls, setting the deadline for arrival at Election Day.
That means any ballots that show up in the days following, even if they are postmarked on or before Election Day, can't be counted.
It also restricts anyone other than the voter, an immediate family member or a caretaker from turning in an absentee ballot.
Republican lawmakers say it makes Iowa elections safer and more secure, but Terese Grant, President of the League of Women Voters of Iowa, says it suppresses voters.
"Any restrictions we feel is inappropriate and unnecessary and we would like some changes made," Grant said.
The League of Women Voters in Iowa will hold a rally right before they turn over the petition on Monday in the rotunda at noon.
