Iowa’s controversial bottle law targeted in next session - KCCI Des Moines
DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) —
Iowa lawmakers will likely revisit changing the bottle bill this upcoming legislative session.
KCRG reports the debate has been ongoing for many years.
Redemption centers say they don't make enough money off a penny handling fee, but grocery stores have sanitary concerns over redemption locations being inside stores.
During the pandemic, many Iowans stopped taking their empty cans and bottles back to grocery stores, and many retailers stopped accepting them.
“I will never guarantee on the bottle bill that anything will be done with it. However, I think we've been making more progress on it than years in the past,” Republican House Speaker Pat Grassley said.
Last session, lawmakers proposed a change that would have allowed grocers to opt out if there's a redemption center within 20 miles. That got voted down.
