'It's about relationship building': Instructor talks policing best practices ahead of Alamance law enforcement course - Burlington Times News

This Friday, Alamance Community College is hosting a training session for local law enforcement officers about 21st century policing.

The session will be taught by James Fisher-Davis, of Equilibrium Up who, along with M. Quentin Williams of Dedication of Community, teaches similar classes across the state and across the country to law enforcement groups as well as students.

Fisher-Davis is a former NC Department of Public Safety Chief, and he is a certified law enforcement instructor for the NC Department of Justice Academy. Williams is a former FBI agent and federal prosecutor.

"In essence it's about relationship building," Fisher-Davis said of the class. "This is about building strong, meaningful, substantive sustainable relationships, not only within your department in the agency but also within the community as well."

Officers are taught to be the best possible people, with a goal of helping them to be more empathetic and seek to understand the perspectives of people they come into contact with.

This training is different than others, Fisher-Davis said, because officers create an action plan for how to carry out what they've learned.

When it comes to 21st century policing, Fisher-Davis said officers should focus on serving and protecting the community rather than policing it. Fisher-Davis said the term policing can give a connotation that some areas are being focused on more than others but that instead service should apply to the whole community.

"We're a lot stronger together than we are in we are separated," he said.

Normally, the training sessions are open to community members as well as law enforcement officers to encourage communication.

"We're pro community," Fisher-Davis said. "And that means that we're pro everyone within the community. We don't have any agendas; we don't push any narrative ... We're just trying to provide the best information we possibly can so that individuals will learn how to understand one another."
