I’m outraged by how members of the Ohio Redistricting Commission have been able to flout the law. When Ohioans voted for redistricting reforms, we rejected gerrymandering and drawing voting districts in secret “bunkers.”

But that’s exactly what happened, repeatedly, with the state legislative maps. The independent mapmakers hired with our tax dollars were delayed until the 11th hour when GOP mapmakers switched in “new” maps that were almost identical to ones already ruled unconstitutional by the Ohio Supreme Court. And, sure enough, Ohio’s highest court ruled those maps unconstitutional, too. But what is really galling is a federal court’s ruling that if the commission doesn’t develop constitutionally compliant, fair maps by May 28, that court will choose one of those already deemed unconstitutional by the Ohio Supreme Court! This removes any incentive for Republican members to develop better maps!

Republicans often preach about law and order, and yet they have refused to follow the new redistricting rules we voters added to the Ohio Constitution to end gerrymandering. It appears that they are going get away not only with unfair gerrymandered maps, but with creating a terrible mess, including two primaries, that will confuse voters and waste millions of taxpayer dollars.
