John Elmore opening new law firm with his daughter, Kristen Elmore-Garcia - Buffalo Business First - Buffalo Business First
Since she was a kid, Kristen Elmore-Garcia has spent time in her father’s law offices. Now she’ll be his partner as they open their personal injury law firm in Buffalo.
John Elmore, who’s been in partnership with Steve Boyd since 2014, is starting a separate firm with his attorney-daughter Elmore-Garcia.
“It’s fun coming to work with family,” Elmore-Garcia said. “He’s always teaching me something, and I’m always helping him with different things.”
Elmore’s been practicing law for 35 years. Last year, Elmore and Boyd purchased and renovated the former Crisis Center building at 2969 Main Street, near Hertel Avenue.
Elmore said his new firm and Boyd’s firm will still work collaboratively on some litigation projects but will occupy separate space with their separate firms in that facility. Elmore-Garcia and Elmore plan to open in March with a team of paralegals.
“Steve and I are close friends, and we look at this as a win-win situation for both of us,” Elmore said. “We’re really excited about moving to Buffalo and to take a building that’s been empty for many years. That area on Main and Hertel is starting to grow, and we’re part of the resurgence of Buffalo.”
Elmore-Garcia previously worked in William Mattar’s firm and at the law offices of Kenney Shelton Liptak Novak, before becoming an assistant district attorney for Erie County in 2020. She joined forces with her father in December.
“Kristen’s been coming to my law office since she’s been in grade school,” Elmore said. “She has been well-groomed for this partnership.”
Elmore-Garcia and her two older siblings spent a lot of time with their dad after their mother, Gwendolyn, died at a young age.
“He pretty much raised us by himself,” Elmore-Garcia said. “If he had court, he’d take us with him.”
Elmore said Buffalo has a rich history of successful family law firms. Partnering with his daughter sets up a natural succession plan for when he’s ready to retire.
“There have been family businesses that started and failed because there was no succession plan,” he said. “To work with my daughter means that when I do eventually retire, there is a succession plan in place.”
Elmore was voted the 2020 lawyer of the year by the Erie County Bar Association. He’s a former partner at Harter Secrest & Emery, a former assistant attorney general and a former assistant district attorney. Both he and Garcia are members of the Minority Bar Association and the NAACP.
