Josephine County Town Hall to Discuss Law Enforcement Funding - KDRV
Josephine County, OR -- A plan to increase funding for Josephine County law enforcement is open for public discussion tonight.
The Josephine County Board of Commissioners will host a town hall meeting regarding local law enforcement and its financial support starting at 6 p.m. in the Anne Basker Auditorium in Grants Pass.
Law enforcement in Josephine County will see a decrease in funding in the coming years, which will take away patrols and administrative efforts, according to Sheriff Dave Daniel.
By the end of the meeting today, Daniel said he hopes to come up with a sustainable solution that ultimately leads to increased funding.
"I would hope to ramp up patrols to 24-hours a day, 7 days a week and I would hope to ramp up our detective's division," he said. "We've done the best we can with what we have and the Josephine County Sheriff's Office has come a long way in the last six years. But we're not done."
There are a few options as to where exactly this money would come from, which is another reason for the town hall meeting. Daniel plans to speak about this with attendees tonight.
"I think we'll talk about a seasonal sales tax, I think we'll talk about potential levies, I think we'll talk about possible taxing districts," he said. "It's really important for all of us to get a seat at the table and start figuring this out."
Citizens will have the chance to share their thoughts on the issue during the meeting, and Daniel said he is looking forward to listening.
"It is vital county leadership hears from our citizens as we work for them," Daniel said.
The County plans to livestream the meeting on the its facebook page and at https://go.usa.gov/xzwRU. Residents may participate using the videoconferencing platform Zoom if they email [email protected] and include "Remote Attendance" in the subject line no later than 3pm March 30. A link and instructions will then be provided.
