Kearney law enforcement helps get ready for hunting season - KSNB Local 4
KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - Law enforcement agencies from around Kearney banded together to help hunters get ready for deer season on Sunday morning.
Hunters were able to come to the Kearney Police Training Range to set their sights on their rifles and get information on safe hunting tactics.
Safe hunting is the name of the game for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. In recent years they have worked through an education program to teach safe hunting practices.
“Hunter education is one of those things that actually has things a lot safer for this sport throughout the years,” said Lieutenant Mike Thome of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. ”The occurrence of injuries by firearms is actually really really low as a result of that hunter education program.”
One hunter who came to the event, Craig Peshek, says this was especially helpful since he was sidelined with the pandemic last year.
“Due to COVID last year I haven’t had a chance to shoot my deer rifle since 2019 and you should always have your guns and all of your equipment sighted in and safe and ready to go before deer season starts,” Peshek said.
Deer hunting season is set to begin on Saturday, November 13.
