Kelleher Law Holiday Hoopfest Day 3: Golden Gate edges Fairdale (Ky.) in consolation bracket - Naples Daily News
Recaps of games on the third day of the Kelleher Law Holiday Hoopfest boys basketball tournament at Golden Gate High School on Wednesday, Dec. 29:
Golden Gate 54, Fairdale (Ky.) 51
Three games, three tight ones for the Titans. But two victories.
Wednesday, they combined themes of their first two games — a tight victory and falling into a hole.
"That was the smartest, controlled we've played all year," Golden Gate coach Guy Hensley said. "... For our guys to have that rough loss (Tuesday) night that, I think we should've won if we didn't get in a deep hole, to come bounce back just shows how great a guys these are."
Golden Gate hit a last-second 3-pointer to beat Largo by a point in the first round, then was outscored 16-0 and trailed Hallandale by 18 before rallying to within a point in the fourth quarter. But the Titans couldn't complete the comeback, falling by seven.
Against Fairdale, Golden Gate trailed 32-22 early in the third before its pressure became effective, and the Bulldogs helped by becoming sloppy with the ball.
Aileek Ward started a 9-0 run that was capped by Edvince Tranchant's 3-pointer that gave the Titans a 33-32 lead. Golden Gate went up by six but the Bulldogs (5-8) scored the last four of the third and first two of the fourth to tie it at 40-40 with 7:22 to go.
Tre'von Shedrick's second three-point play of the quarter made it 52-51 with 59.4 seconds to go.
Both teams got sloppy after that, and Golden Gate ended up with the ball, lost it, but the Titans' Jeffery Simpson grabbed the loose ball and was fouled with 19 seconds left. He calmly made both ends of the one-and-one.
"Big, big clutch, grabbed the ball two hands," Hensley said. "The other day we're working in practice I'm just throwing loose balls and telling them just grab it with two hands because a lot of kids these days just want to dribble it. I'm like just pick it up. He grabbed it, got fouled, came down and knocked it down."
The Bulldogs got off two 3-pointers in the final seconds, but didn't make either.
"For them to adjust on the fly out of the timeout, and the defense I wanted to run and kind of make them waste a little clock, and not foul, and we did it perfect, and got the rebound, and got out of there," Hensley said.
Shedrick had 14 points and eight rebounds, and Ward and Gerkoby Christopher each had 11 points for Golden Gate (6-5). Jayshawn Shannon had 14 points and nine rebounds for Fairdale, and Jacob Tucker added 13. Leading scorer Dalton Hicks was held to 10 points.
Lakeland 68, Mariner 57
The Tritons hung around against the Dreadnaughts but could never got all the way back after Lakeland took a bit of control of the game in the third quarter.
Mariner (12-2) was within five early in the fourth, but Lakeland (7-1) scored six straight points. The Tritons had a few more opportunities but only got as close as five.
"It's a game of momentum, and we really never had it," Mariner coach Ryan Hercek said. "We couldn't make shots, and then when it came down to getting a stop or two, we couldn't get the rebounds. When you can't do either of those things, it makes it hard."
Rolijah Hardy had 19 points and seven rebounds for Lakeland. Kamaurri McKinley added 15, and Anthony Wilcox Jr. and Tyler Williams had 12 apiece. The 6-foot-3 Williams, a wide receiver in football with 20 scholarship offers, added eight rebounds.
The Tritons made 5 of 15 3-pointers in the first half, but just 1 of 12 in the second.
Justin Lewis had 15 points, Armando Arguelles Jr. added 13, and Kelvin Jimenez and Marcus Kelly scored 12 apiece. Kelly had six rebounds and six assists.
"It's good to play teams from out of the area," Hercek said. "You see everybody. You play everybody. ... It's a good tournament and we had fun and hopefully we learned something."
Doral 64, Lehigh 41
Justin Johnson, a 6-7 junior, had 29 points and guard Gabe Hernandez added 23 to score 81% of the points for the Firebirds (7-5).
Johnson added six rebounds and three blocks. Both Hernandez and Johnson had two 3-pointers apiece.
Jose Constanza-Garcia had 11 points and was the only player in double figures for the Lightning (6-6), who were outscored 25-9 in the third quarter as Doral took a 51-32 lead into the final frame.
Largo 59, Gulf Coast 40
The Packers got their first win after a couple of heartbreaking losses, by one on a last-second 3-pointer by Golden Gate in the first round, and by three to Largo on Tuesday.
Jayden Loydd had a game-high 18 points and added six rebounds and six assists. Adrian Moss had nine points and Preston Church added eight for Largo, which jumped out to a 26-10 first-quarter lead.
Wesley Roark had 12 for Gulf Coast (7-6), and Yohandry Ortiz added 10.
Naples 88, Riverdale 50
The Golden Eagles got their first Hoopfest win in a matchup of 0-2 teams.
Kerry Brown had 17 points to lead four players in double figures for Naples (4-8). Marques Leon had 13, and Thompson Defhommes and Keoni Hawkins scored 10 apiece.
Jerrick McDonald had 13 points for the Raiders (0-12), and Myles Jones added 12.
First Baptist 53, Fort Myers 37
The Lions finished 2-1 in the tournament, with the loss by just three points to Somerset Prep in the first round.
Olsen Henry had 20 points and 10 rebounds for FBA (7-2), which built a 31-15 halftime lead behind 59% shooting. The Lions made 4 of 9 3-pointers in the opening half. Andre Santos added 12 points and Eli Stewart had 10.
Tyler Schultz had 10 points to lead the Green Wave (4-6), who went 1-2 in the Hoopfest.
