Keokuk man takes law enforcement on chase | Daily Democrat | mississippivalleypublishing.com - Mississippi Valley Publishing

Several area police departments, sheriff’s offices and two state patrols were involved in a pursuit on Saturday that started in Lee County and ended in Clark County.

The chase resulted in the arrest of Jerry Myer Caviness, 48, of Keokuk. He had felony warrants out of Clark County, Missouri as well as Lee County. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office reported it would release more information in the coming days.

The pursuit started at about 9:15 on Carbide Lane, west of the Highway 61 bypass of Keokuk. The Lee County Deputy reported to the dispatch center that the car was not stopping for an attempted stop for speeding and equipment violation.

As the chase neared the bypass, a Keokuk police officer reported he was at the south end of the bypass, ready with stop sticks to deflate the car’s tires, should they come that way.

Instead, the car turned north and then onto Highway 218/61. An Iowa State Patrol officer was nearby, but out of position for the stop sticks. The driver turned onto Argyle Road and headed west.

The deputy in pursuit gave updates of speed, going anywhere from 60 mph to 100 mph throughout the chase.

A deputy was ready to intercept the vehicle at Highway 27 and Argyle Road, but once the two vehicles passed Melrose Church, the driver attempting to flee, turned onto 340th Street, apparently to cut across to Highway 27 and perhaps go into Missouri.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office and Missouri State Highway Patrol were notified before the chase went into Clark County. The Lee County Deputy stayed on the vehicle while waiting for a Clark County deputy to find them.

The two cars drove around several county highways, including County Roads B, C, CC and up Highway 81. At one point they were near Revere and also on a couple gravel roads, which made the chase that much more dangerous with gravel dust.

Things got bad for the driver of the car when he clipped a deer in the roadway, busting his radiator. That did not stop him, however, as he kept pushing the car in his attempt to get away from law enforcement.

It is not 100% clear, but it was believed to be, by scanner traffic reports, that a Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office deputy got the car to run over stop sticks. The driver still did not want to give up and continued until he was running on only his front rims.

The car could not go anymore though and stopped. The Lee County Deputy who initiated the chase reported a Clark County deputy and Missouri State Patrol officer had Caviness in custody, so he headed back to Lee County.

The Clark Count Sheriff’s Office reported the man was arrested on Highway 81, about four miles north of Kahoka, Mo.
