Kevin Law officially resigns as LIREDC co-chair - Long Island Business News

Kevin Law, Gov. Kathy Hochul’s nominee for the next chair of Empire State Development, is officially resigning from his role as Long Island Regional Economic Development Council co-chair, effective Thursday. Both the LIREDC and ESD positions are volunteer roles.
While awaiting New York State Senate confirmation for his role as ESD chair, Law shared insights to council members about the new Long Island Investment Fund workgroup.
The workgroup aims to generate ideas for recently approved additional $350 million for the region that was included in New York State’s budget.
“It has been an amazing 11 years working with all of you as we secured hundreds of millions of dollars for hundreds of great projects in Nassau and Suffolk Counties,” Law wrote in an email to the council. “I thank you for all the support you showed to me and your commitment to the entire REDC process.”
For 11 years, Law had co-chaired LIREDC with former Hofstra president Stuart Rabinowitz, who also stepped down last year, after leaving academia. ESD is expected to announce the new co-chairs, as well as new REDC members.
“I am confident you will continue to do a great job for our region with the new leadership and membership,” Law told council members.
Jim Morgo and Richard Guardino will co-chair the LIIF, which would fund projects in Nassau and Suffolk to support manufacturing, agriculture, business parks, community anchor facilities, advanced technology, biotechnology, biomedical facilities and Main Street revitalization, Law said.
They will work to generate ideas and suggestions from the LIREDC, and from state senate and assembly delegation, town supervisors, village mayors, our county executives , colleges and universities, chambers of commerce and NGOs and “to identify good public and private projects for the LIIF,” Law said.
Morgo is currently president of Morgo Private Public Strategies and a longtime public servant. He is a former Suffolk County chief deputy county executive, and served as the county’s first commissioner of economic development and workforce housing. A former Suffolk legislator, he spent 17 years as the Long Island Housing Partnership’s first president and CEO.
Guardino is executive director of Long Island Regional Planning Council and a former vice president of Hofstra’s vice president for business development. He spent 21 years on the Hempstead Town Board, including five years as town supervisor.
The best ideas generated from the LIIF workgroup could then be recommended to the REDC executive committee, and could serve as candidates for consideration ESD approval, Law said.
