Lake County community remembers the legacy of law enforcement enthusiast Kevin Couture - Yahoo News
When it came to inspiring people, Kevin Couture had a gift.
From a young age, Couture was fascinated with law enforcement and first responders. As a child with cerebral palsy, he couldn’t see anything out the window like his siblings, just the flashing lights and sirens of nearby emergencies. This, his father believes, is what began Kevin’s vivid imagination and love for the heroes outside his window.
“That momentary excitement of sound removed him from his mundane world of non-ambulation,” his father, Henri, said. “Those sounds became synonymous with good people helping others. It generated excitement and a chance to go into another world, one that required his development of an incredible gift: imagination.”

Kevin was 18 months old when he was given his cerebral palsy diagnosis. He underwent multiple surgeries followed by six months in a full body cast. Through physical and occupational therapy, Kevin was able to stand with a walker at age 6 and took his first steps at age 8.
Growing up, Kevin’s wild imagination was still intact and a book was published with all his “adventures” like the dinosaur in the back yard and his eyewitness experience during 9/11.
It also became apparent that Kevin never knew a stranger.
As his son approached his 16th birthday, Henri recalled his son walking up to several Lake County officials and inviting them to his birthday party.
“You know what,” Henri said. “All three of the men showed up for his party. Kevin was always going up and introducing himself to people, asking for their calling card. He frequently called them and was so excited to talk to them.”
Maj. Chris Delibro recalled these conversations and how it was the highlight of his day.
“One thing I always looked forward to was Kevin’s phone calls,” Delibro said. “He would always start the conversation by saying ‘Chris guess what?’ He would then tell you about his next or upcoming adventure. Whether it was a vacation in North Carolina, the next parade he was participating in or a police department he was going to visit, Kevin’s excitement was always so infectious you couldn’t help but love it when he called and be excited for him. He absolutely loved law enforcement. He will definitely be missed by all of us.”
