CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Lake County Sheriff Frank Leonbruno issued a statement to local residents on how his agency will be updating procedures since the passage of Senate Bill 215 into law.

When the law takes effect in mid-June, Ohioans who are 21 years or older will be able to legally carry a concealed firearm without obtaining a license or completing training.

Because of the “significant change” in how firearms can be handled in Ohio, the sheriff said his deputies will undergo updated training based on changes in the law.

“The training will consist of a legal update on the law itself. We will also train on how to address citizens during traffic stops and other encounters as it relates to the law. This may include deputies making inquiries about a citizen’s armed status. Interacting with citizens who are exercising their constitutional rights is nothing new for Lake County Deputies, and I do not anticipate any major issues at this point,” Sheriff Leonbruno wrote.

CHL and CCW permits will still be issued in Ohio after the law takes effect; this would allow registered firearms owners to carry across state lines where eligible.

Prior to June 13, a concealed carry license is still required for handgun possession in Ohio.
