LAURINBURG, N.C. (WPDE) — Laurinburg Police Chief Darwin "Duke" Williams announced that he's retiring on June 1 after 30 years in law enforcement.

Williams is well-loved and respected in the community.

Children and adults describe him as a man who does all he can to help others.

Williams tried to retire in 2019 but reconsidered after so many people urged him to stay on for a few more years.

Williams graduated from Scotland High School in 1988 and Fayetteville State University in 1992.

He started his career in law enforcement in 1993 at the Scotland County Sheriff's Office under Sheriff Wayne Bryant.

In 1994, he started work as a patrol officer with the City of Laurinburg.

Williams said he worked his way up through the ranks to become a sergeant, lieutenant and eventually chief.

He added he's served the community with "passion and dedication."

Williams' message on the department's website is "The Laurinburg Police Department is dedicated to establishing an environment in which members of the department and community thrive."

Williams has coached, mentored and supported aspiring athletes over the years.

He also volunteered with Scotland County Parks and Recreation.

Williams hasn't said what he'll do after he retires, but many hope he'll stick around in the Laurinburg community.

No word on when the search will begin for Williams' replacement.
