Law about domestic violence convictions long overdue | News, Sports, Jobs - Williamsport Sun-Gazette
We support a bill sponsored by state Rep. Scott Conklin, D-Rush Township, to prohibit anyone convicted of domestic violence or related crimes from holding public office.
We’re just unsure why it has taken this long.
“What type of individual would … do harm to someone they say they love? I don’t believe that type of individual should be serving as a legislator,” Conklin told the Centre Daily Times, as reported in last Monday’s edition of the Sun-Gazette.
Domestic violence “is a staggering plague on our community,” Anne Ard, Centre Safe executive director, said as the legislation was unveiled.
We agree. And, again, question why our legislature hasn’t addressed this years early.
We question why the administrations of Gov. Tom Wolf, Gov. Tom Corbett and Gov. Ed Rendell did not make this a priority — especially Corbett and Rendell, who were prosecuting attorneys who took oaths to pursue justice against such criminals.
The old phrase “better later than never,” while true, does not excuse years if not decades of inaction on what should be a clear, common-sense measure to improve the character of our elected bodies.
