BALTIMORE (WBFF) — Analysts are forecasting that Baltimore's bloodshed could reach historic highs, potentially the deadliest year the city has ever seen, based on current crime trends.

Some Baltimore residents tell Fox45 News they simply want to feel safe in their communities.

"One of the things that's so disturbing is the level of fear in almost every community," said Maury Richards, former police chief in Martinsburg, W.V. "When you have honest, hardworking people who are afraid to show their face in their own neighborhood, you know things are out of control."

Richards lays the blame for the crime crisis at the feet of city leadership.

"It's the result of terrible policies that have allowed crime, disorder and chaos to take over the entire city," said Richards.

Crime often increases during the summer months. Richards says things will only get worse without a major course correction.

"We have to get back to the basics. When, you know, Marilyn Mosby introduced the policy not to prosecute many criminals, and unfortunately the mayor and the police commissioner went along with that, it really started this violent trend. That needs to be scrapped immediately," said Richards. "The police need to be enforcing the laws and demand that the prosecutor goes forward with those cases."

Experts say criminals should fear repercussions for their actions, or else they will keep committing crimes.

"You have a situation here where there's not a criminal in this city that fears any consequences. Until that changes, nothing's going to get better," said Richards. "Being 500 officers short, you need more police, but unless you have, and I can't emphasize this enough... policies to go out and arrest these criminals, and demand that they get prosecuted."
