A law banning obscene license plates in Maine takes effect Monday, but getting that foul language off the roads won’t happen overnight.

A majority of other states already have laws that restrict license plates that are considered profane -- sexually suggestive -- racist -- drug related -- or religiously offensive.

Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows says Maine became the “wild west of vanity license plates” when it dropped its review process in 20-15.

Right now -- the state is outlining laws that will cut down on license plate profanity -- while also protecting first amendment rights.

Bellows says that process will include public comment -- but it could take two to four months to complete.

In the meantime -- requests for vanity plates that are considered offensive will be put on hold until the new rules are sorted out.
