Law banning plastic and paper bags in New Jersey goes into effect May 4 - News 12 Bronx
New Jersey residents will need to very quickly get over the habit of using disposable plastic bags and learn to use reusable shopping bags. This is because the state will implement a ban on disposable bags beginning on Wednesday, May 4.
At the Walmart along Route 66 in Neptune City, customers were still filling their cars with groceries stuffed in plastic bags.
While some stay the reusable bags will take some getting used to, others have been using them for years.
“I’ve been using these for five years or more, so it's not going to bother me,” says Valeri Ferris.
“A lot of these plastic bags are going in the ocean. That’s not good,” says Wayne Ferris.
“I think it’s absolutely ridiculous,” says Teresa DiMartino, of Tinton Falls. “You know, prices have gone up so much and now they expect you to not only check yourself out, but carry your things out. It’s ridiculous.”
Some stores are trying to help their customers. Stop & Shop is offering free reusable bags starting on Monday. Target is already giving out reusable bags. Anyone bringing their own bag will get 5 cents off.
It is not just grocery stores that are impacted. The ban also includes restaurants, liquor stores and any retail shop. But those businesses can use paper bags.
Restaurants will also be banned from using Styrofoam containers.
