Law enforcement across the Central Coast lend a hand on day of officer's memorial - KSBW Monterey

SALINAS, Calif. —

Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies filled in for Salinas police as they attended memorial services for fallen officer, Jorge Alvarado.

While Salinas police attend funeral services, law enforcement agencies from other departments are working overtime patrols on the streets of Salinas.

Monterey County Det. Sgt. Bryan Hoskins opened Thursday morning's briefing.

"Thanks, everybody for coming! Santa Cruz, we appreciate you coming on behalf of the Sheriff and chief. He wants to thank you for your support of our county," Hoskins said.

It wasn't your usual roll call.

Almost a dozen agencies from throughout the Central Coast. Each arriving in their own uniforms.

They are unified in their attempt to keep the streets of Salinas safe during this difficult time.

"It's a little nerve-wracking, especially in the circumstances leading up to it, but we're happy to be here for the community of Salinas to help out officers so they can take the day for their officer," said Santa Cruz police Officer Richard Boolootian.

The area may be unfamiliar to the men and women filling in on these shifts, but the state law is the same and that's what's important.

They're all doubled up, that's for safety reasons and for those reasons we have officers come in for other counties who may not know the city of Salinas very well," said Monterey County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy John Thornburg.

It's not unusual for police agencies to cover for each other during an officer's funeral.

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office has taken the lead in working with the outside agencies to clarify their duties and provide an overview of the areas they'll be covering.

"Years ago, when Santa Cruz lost two officers, Santa Cruz Police Department, we help cover the city of Santa Cruz so, law enforcement community steps up to cover each other and help each other when these tragic events take place," Thornburg said.

Police and deputies will be working 12-hour shifts that began this morning and will continue till Friday morning.
