MONUMENT, Colo. (KKTV) - Law enforcement has a woman in custody after she fired at a state trooper on I-25 Monday morning.

An extensive crime scene can be seen on both sides of the interstate just south of the El Paso/Douglas line as troopers sort out the scene.

A spokesperson for State Patrol says the incident began in Castle Rock, though details on what occurred are scarce. At some point, the female suspect fled Castle Rock police officers and began heading south towards Colorado Springs.

While fleeing, CSP spokesperson Trooper Josh Lewis says she sped past a trooper who was also traveling south on I-25 at that time. Immediately after passing the trooper, the suspect first sped up as though she was trying to get away from the trooper, then stopped abruptly, got out of her vehicle, and shot at the trooper. The shot missed the trooper, who was able to take her in custody.

Lewis says it’s unclear if the trooper ever fired their weapon.

At least one lane is blocked on both sides of the interstate. Traffic is getting through, but major delays should be expected.

Police Activity I-25 SB mm 163. Female party taken into custody after shots fired; no injuries. No danger to the public. Lanes closed, but traffic flowing slowly. Expect delays, please watch for officers working the scene. Will update with more information as we learn more.
