SYRACUSE, N.Y. — It's that time of year when you'll find law enforcement officials wandering around store aisles with children to buy toys. Every holiday season, law enforcement agencies across Central New York hold 'Shop with a Cop' events.

The Madison County Sheriff's Office will hold their fourth annual 'Shop with a Sheriff' event Saturday at the Walmart in Oneida. 36 kids have been chosen to participate including three from each elementary school in the county, except Oneida.

Children from families in need will shop with a deputy or correction officer starting at 9 a.m. A majority of the money the children will spend comes from the sheriff's office 'No Shave Fundraiser.'

The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office will also hold a shopping event Saturday at Dick's Sporting Good at Destiny U.S.A. from 10 a.m. to noon. 25 kids have been selected to participate.

The Syracuse Police Department will hold its eighth annual 'Shop with a Cop' event at the Walmart on Basile Rowe in East Syracuse Saturday. Registration starts at 9:15 a.m. and 20 children will be chosen. All the children have been victims or witnesses to criminal activity, fires, accidents, or medical emergencies.

Each child will get a gift card with donations raised through various agencies.

Many law enforcement agencies have hosted similar events this year. The Oneida Police Department held an event last weekend along with members of the Canastota Police Department.

More than 40 kids went shopping this month with officers in the Cortland Police Department. Children got to 'Shop with a Hero' with representatives from the Phoenix, Solvay, Oswego, Central Square, and other police agencies as well as fire departments, dentists, mayors, and other leaders in Central New York; hosted by the Phoenix Police Department.
