Law enforcement, common council ask for continued support following Albany homicide - WRGB
ALBANY, NY (WRGB) — The city of Albany was on a streak of no homicides for the year, until Friday night.
Police were on scene Saturday morning, the shooting happened near Grand Street and Madison Ave, in the South end of Albany.
Albany Police found 30-year-old Christopher Bryant of Albany; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
"We're asking anyone in the community with information to please contact our detectives, or if they wish to remain anonymous, they can always utilize crime stoppers. at this time there is no arrest," said Steve Smith, Albany Police spokesperson.
This time last year the city had seen three homicides with six more occurring in the month of May.
At the start of April, the police department told CBS6 they believe better community relationships and more in person support led to the lower violence rates.
Smith says officers also took 60 handguns off the streets so far this year, almost double the number from this time last year.
“Two nights ago, we made an arrest for an individual in possession of a handgun, who was also responsible for a shot fired incident that occurred last year on Clinton Ave,” Smith added.
Common Council member Owusu Anane says community relationships are crucial. "It's really a tragic homicide that took place, for us, for our streets to be safe we have to make sure APD and the community are working together."
In addition to changes at the police department, Common Council member Tom Hoey, says the city created a public safety committee and they're working on more prevention and education efforts.
“Especially educating young people about violence and violence prevention,” Hoey says. “Everyone wants a safe community."
Now, with the warmer weather approaching, council members and law enforcement are hopeful the violence rates will stay down this summer.
“All across the country when the weather gets nice, there's more people outside we tend to see these tragic incidents take place,” Anane added. “But I believe as long as APD and the community is working together we're going to eradicate this senseless gun violence we're seeing all across this country not just the city of Albany.”
