The hunt for an inmate who escaped from the Chaves County Detention Center continued throughout the day Monday, with local law enforcement fanning out across Roswell and surrounding areas.

Undersheriff Charles Yslas said late Monday afternoon deputies and officers with the Roswell Police Department spent the day following up on tips they received about the whereabouts of 37-year-old Daniel Cobos, searching at least eight or nine homes where it was believed he could be.

“As soon as … we get through with one tip, we go straight to the next one,” he explained.

Cobos is described by authorities as 5 feet nine inches tall and 120 pounds with brown eyes and short black hair, and heavily tattooed. The tattoos include artwork on his neck, as well as a mustache, goatee, and eyebrows tattooed on his face.

Yslas said a photo of Cobos has been widely circulated on social media. “We are asking the public to take a good look at the picture and if you see anyone who resembles that, by all means give us a call and let us know,” he said.

Authorities though warn that people should not try to approach Cobos themselves given that he is considered armed and dangerous.

“We are asking people to call 911 if they encounter him or or hear of him being in any location,” Yslas added. People with information can also contact the Sheriff’s Office directly at 575-624-6500.

Cobos was reported missing from the Chaves County Detention Center Sunday at 10:27 p.m., touching off a frantic search for the inmate who was being held on charges of failure to appear on a felony charge; possession of controlled substances; and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer.

Electronic court records state a warrant has been issued for Cobos on a charge of escape from jail.

Authorities, including Yslas and Chaves County Manager Bill Williams, stressed the investigation into how Cobos escaped is still ongoing and would not comment. But court documents state it is believed he escaped through the ceiling and armed himself with what is described as an improvised weapon.

Once it was determined he had escaped, deputies — in conjunction with officers from the Roswell Police Department — searched the interior of the facility and other buildings within the facility compound, Yslas said.

Drones and canines were eventually deployed to assist in the search, which expanded to adjacent properties and gradually expanded outward, and now includes all of Roswell.

Williams stated that in response to the escape, all inmates have been transferred away from the area where Cobos was housed and where the escape is believed to have taken place, and are now being housed in other parts of the facility.

Electronic court records indicate that in addition to the resisting and obstructing charges that stem from an incident in August, Cobos is scheduled to go to trial in February on two counts of armed robbery and one count of resisting, evading or obstructing an officer in another case.
