Law enforcement escorts fallen Kingsville police officer Sherman Benys back home - Corpus Christi Caller-Times
Community members from across the Coastal Bend lined up to support and watch area law enforcement escort the body of fallen Kingsville police officer Sherman Otto Benys Jr. back home to Kingsville on Thursday afternoon.
The procession began at the Nueces County Medical Examiner's Office in Corpus Christi and passed by the Kingsville Police Department on its way to Turcotte Piper Mortuary.
Benys died early Thursday at Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial from a gunshot wound, according to a Facebook post from the Kingsville Police Department.
He was shot on Monday while responding to a domestic dispute in the 300 block of South Wanda.
Police said some officers began rendering aid to the injured officer, while others pursued the fleeing suspect.
The suspect was eventually apprehended and taken into custody by officers.
The suspect, listed on the Kleberg County Sheriff's Office online inmate roster, has been identified as 40-year-old Alfredo DeLeon.
Police said the investigation of the incident is ongoing and may be completed in the coming weeks.
Funeral arrangements for Benys are pending.
"Chief Ricardo Torres, the officer’s and staff of the Kingsville Police Department and the family of Patrolman Benys have been overwhelmed by the support of our law enforcement brothers and sisters, and the citizens of the region for their prayers, blood, and monetary donations," the KPD's post continued.
The police chief asked the community to keep Benys' wife, Vicky, his daughter Breanne, son Benjamin and daughter Bailey "in your prayers in the coming days."
Joe Muñoz, president of the Kingsville Police Department Former Officers & Employees organization, told the Caller-Times Thursday that the organization has now increased their GoFundMe goal to $50k to support the Benys family in the coming days and weeks.
