Law Enforcement Expert talks about violence in schools - Fox Baltimore
Several violent fights in schools across central Maryland this year have parents concerned about their children's safety.
Baltimore County parents have held a protest saying not enough is being done to stop the school violence.
Former Chief of Police in Martinsburg, West Virginia and Law Enforcement Expert, Maury Richards, said he believe the violence is an extension of what’s going on in society.
“Right now we are in a situation were lawlessness, violence is being tolerated, there are very few consequences for these law breakers and that’s being seen in our schools as well,” said Richards.
In some schools, resource officers help deter crime, Richards says those School Resource Officers are essential.
“If you really look at who’s against these SRO’s it’s not the parents of these students, it’s administrators and people who believe in policies that are really anti-police, some of them want to abolish the police,” said Richards.
The debate is over whether or not SRO’s should be armed. To that, Richards said, “If you’re a police officer you need to be armed other wise you might as well just have security guards.”
Richards says at the end of the day he’s glad to see parents sticking up for their students.
