ST. ALBANS, W.Va. (WCHS) — Deputies and humane officers got some hands-on training on how to handle horses and other large animals on Friday.

While animal cases involving dogs and cats are pretty common, large animals are a bit different. The training allowed animal control officers some experience with bigger animals like mules and horses.

The sixth annual training event was held by rescue group Heart of Phoenix in Morgantown and St. Albans on Friday. The training was open to law enforcement from West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky.

“In West Virginia, a lot of counties are understaffed and don’t have a ton of people able to address horse neglect or livestock neglect,” instructor Tinia Creamer said. “What we’ve tried to do is develop a training that is free to counties.”

This year’s training featured an expanded hands-on course for officers and was free of charge.
