Law enforcement helping to keep trick-or-treaters safe on Halloween night - WCTI12.com

BAYBORO, Pamlico County — The streets were filled with children and trick-or-treaters Sunday night. Safety concerns were on a lot of parents' minds on Halloween night.
Trick or treaters set out with one mission- to get the most candy. Parents had another mission, to keep their kids safe.
Mom of 3 Ryan Cofer said her kids don't leave her sight on Halloween.
"I'm a protector. I'm a mom," Cofer stated. "Make sure they get to where they're going. I can watch to see what house they go to and make sure they come back to me."
It was just the parents on the lookout for the children Sunday night; Pamlico County Sheriff Chris Davis has more deputies out on patrol along the busiest roads to keep everyone safe.

"What's going through our head is to keep these kids safe and make sure folks aren't terrorizing our community," Sheriff Davis shared. "kids are our greatest asset."
On Halloween, deputies watched for kids walking along the roadway and making sure cars slow down on roads with more trick-or-treating traffic.
Sheriff Davis said Halloween night was also an opportunity for his deputies to build relationships within the community, all while keeping an extra eye on kids.
"We like to show people we are involved in the community," Sheriff Davis explained. "We don't just talk about it; we want to be about it. We want to be there and show these kids and families that we are law enforcement and have to make sure people are following the law, but at the same time we are approachable."
For Cofer, knowing deputies were there and kept her kids safe was comforting and helped her walk away with something some would say was sweeter than candy.
"As a parent, I just like watching them. The memories that are made and them having fun with their friends," Cofer shared.
Parents also said it was great to have the tradition of trick or treating back in full swing after kids lost so many holiday traditions during the pandemic.
