WASHINGTON (7NEWS) — Authorities in Washington, D.C. are planning for a group of American truckers to arrive in the nation's capital in March.

The group, “The People’s Convoy”, are protesting COVID-19 mandates due to pandemic restrictions.

The Metropolitan Police Department says they are "aware of potential First Amendment activities that may take place in the National Capital Region, including Washington, DC, in March."

"At this time, a permit application has not been submitted to MPD. As with all First Amendment demonstrations, MPD will be monitoring, assessing and planning accordingly with our law enforcement partners," MDP said in a statement to 7News.

In preparation, MPD says they "have increased available resources, including the activation of our Civil Disturbance Units."

The United States Capitol Police also tell 7News they are "aware of plans for a series of truck convoys arriving in Washington, DC around the time of the State of the Union.'

"As with any demonstration, the USCP will facilitate lawful First Amendment activity. The USCP is closely coordinating with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, including DC’s Metropolitan Police Department, the United States Park Police, the United States Secret Service and other allied agencies to include the DC National Guard," USCP stated.

According to a release from The People's Convoy, "This convoy is about freedom and unity: the truckers are riding unified across party and state lines and with people of all colors and creeds – Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Mormons, Agnostics, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, Republican, Democrats."

They say they will abide by agreements with local authorities.

This move comes as Canadian truckers continue to protest COVID-19 mandates in their country. The trucker protest closed a handful of Canada-U.S. border posts and shut down key parts of the capital city for weeks.
