Law enforcement officers shoot and kill Aniak man after he shoots deputy US marshal, troopers say - Anchorage Daily News

Members of a U.S. Marshals task force shot and killed an Aniak man Friday after he shot and wounded a deputy U.S. marshal during efforts to apprehend him on a felony arrest warrant, Alaska State Troopers said.

The task force was at an Aniak residence around 1 p.m. Friday at the request of troopers to “effect a high-risk arrest warrant” for Andrew John, 34, troopers said in an online report. The $2,500 warrant for third-degree assault was related to an incident that occurred in the Kuskokwim River community on Jan. 29, according to troopers.

While the marshals task force was inside clearing the residence, John fired at the team, striking and wounding a deputy U.S. marshal, troopers said. The injured deputy was evacuated and the task force established a perimeter surrounding the home, according to troopers.

“A short time later, John emerged from his home armed with a loaded shotgun,” troopers said in the report. “In response to the threat, multiple members of the task force fired their weapons fatally striking John.”

He was declared dead on site, and his remains were being taken to the State Medical Examiner Office for autopsy, according to troopers. Next of kin have been notified.

The injured deputy U.S. marshal was taken to the clinic in Aniak and flown to a hospital in the Anchorage area, and is in fair condition, troopers said.

The Alaska State Troopers Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting, and the state Office of Special Prosecutions will conduct an independent review of the investigation, according to troopers.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
