Law enforcement officers were prepared for tense moments at Ellis sentencing - Fox11online.com

OUTAGAMIE COUNTY (WLUK) -- Courthouse security training pays off in Outagamie County.
Law enforcement says it was anticipating tense moments at the sentencing of Dezman Ellis.
“Our deputies, we had several deputies, we had several officers from other departments there, we were aware that this situation might escalate and it did and we intervened," Outagamie County Sheriff's Office Capt. Ryan Carpenter said.
Ellis is convicted of fatally shooting 19-year-old Jovanni Frausto and injuring a bystander at the Fox River Mall a year ago.
The 18-year-old received a 40-year prison sentence.
When the judge made that announcement, fights broke out in the courtroom.
“It was a very tense and volatile situation. With a sentencing like this, and involving a teenager and a possible sentence of several years in prison, it’s a very tense situation for everybody involved," Carpenter said.
Carpenter says altercations in courtrooms happen periodically.
“We do several trainings not only with our officers, court officers that are down there but with the staff, the court staff and so they can be aware of some warning signs maybe before it happens and be able to intervene prior to anything major going on," Carpenter said.
Outagamie County also coordinated with Appleton Police, just in case fights continued outside the courthouse.
Carpenter says situations like these are difficult to prevent.
"Other than having extra security there and the judge did a good job in this case talking to people, telling them to control their emotions and that sort of thing. There were some people that were removed from court during the proceeding because they were voicing their opinions or inappropriate," Carpenter said.
Outagamie County Sheriff's Office says there were a couple people who were briefly detained yesterday, but they were later released.
